Area
Datasets
There are several key
sources of data available from SPA for a range of geographical areas:
Government Census
Data
SPA has been Agent of Government Census data for nearly 20 years. Our
involvement in census data is one of the longest pedigrees in the industry,
having worked with census data in a range of applications. As a member
of the Association of Census Agencies, SPA are able to recommend and advise
on what census data might be appropriate and in what contexts it should
be used.
Data is available from the 2001Census - information ranging from age and social class to housing type and ethnicity. SPA will again be using this information in analysis projects and offering pre-packaged databases for incorporation into your own GIS in a variety of geographies.
Births & Deaths
Using the Government's Births and Deaths Register as a source, SPA has
put together a comprehensive postal sector database looking at Births
and Deaths statistics across the nation. Information ranges from numbers
of births, first time mothers, previous births, age of mother and social
class of parent. On the "darker side", we hold the number deaths,
death rates and deaths by age and gender.
MOSAIC
From Experian, MOSAIC classifies individual postcodes into 1 of 61 types (which in turn are grouped into 11 broader Groups) using a large number of statistical measures. They pull out the many dimensions of the population throughout Great Britain and define the character of an area in terms that are friendly and meaningful - Symbols of Success or Welfare Borderline, Suburban Comfort, Happy Families or Rural Isolation, Urban Intelligence or Grey Perspectives . Databases which look at the number of each MOSAIC Groups and Type in areas are available at various levels of geography, ranging from OA's (Census Output Authorities) and Postal sectors to postal areas. Ideal for identifying your own target markets.
Retail Multiples
Using data from Retail Locations, Britain's most comprehensive source
of the location of multiple retailers, SPA have constructed geographical
databases which allow you to look at the number and mix of retailers in
any area. Are there lots of multiples? Comparison, convenience or service
orientated? How many key clothing retailers are within 0.5 miles? Using
the Multiple Retailer database at an appropriate level of geography, answers
to these questions are made easier.
Workforce Data
Workforce Data now offers retail and leisure outlets a detailed analysis
of the surrounding workforce for location planning and direct marketing
campaigns. Using information on over 1.8 million businesses from
Wegner Direct Marketing (formerly
Market
Location, the UK's leading business data specialist, our new workforce
databases provide the latest information on the GB Business Universe for
any area around your outlet(s).
To provide the most
flexibility to users, SPA tailor Workforce Data to include just the variables
that are most relevant to your particular application. The list of variables
available ranges from top-level workforce and workplace totals, in-commuting
ratios, employee size, workplace by postcode type, SPA's Broad Industrial
Groups (BIGs), locations by summary industry type, locations by 2 digit
Standard Industrial Classification (SIC), locations by 4 digit SIC. All
variables are available either as location totals i.e. number of businesses
by geographical area, or as workforce totals i.e. the workforce by geographical
area.
In addition, SPA's
Broad Industrial Groups (BIGs) are also available for incorporation into
a geographical database. BIGs provide a very useful and succinct grouping
of business activity based on the similarity of activity and social class
mix - is the workforce in any area predominantly white-collar or blue-collar?
What does this mean for the potential for your particular business or
product at lunchtime or in the evenings? A full description of SPA's Broad
Industrial Groups (BIGs) is available on request.
