Geography Look-Up Tables
A Note on SPA Areas. SPA Areas are our standard catchment area definitions built from postal sectors. They are intended to approximate the catchment areas of main shopping centres. There are over 9000 postal sectors covering the whole of Great Britain, for example CV32 5. By using the postcode sector as a building block, the problem of town splitting is overcome while retaining the excellent address location facility of the postcode system. Town centres, rather than being ignored, become the basis of the system so divisions will not occur. Major cities and conurbations are divided into natural communities, focused on their individual local area shopping centres. SPA areas are non-overlapping and every postal sector in the country is uniquely allocated to a SPA Area. There are 1214 SPA Areas. Each has its own code for use within computer systems, together with much more recognisable names such as Birkenhead or Slough. The code indicates the Region, the County and the number of the SPA area within its County. SPA Areas are designed specifically for area planning and broad-brush market analysis. However, because the system is based on postal sectors, there is still the facility for fast and efficient address location and for the allocation of customers and prospects.
